The iPod shuffle has no screen and two play modes, either playing back an existing playlist in order or "shuffling" the songs into a random order--hence its name. To change from playlist mode to shuffle mode, you move the switch at the top of the third-generation iPod shuffle or one of the two switches on the bottom of the second-generation iPod shuffle.
You control the third-generation iPod shuffle via the three buttons on it headset cord. You control the second-generation iPod shuffle via the five buttons laid out in a circular arrangement on its face.
Because the iPod shuffle has no screen, the only way you can navigate through your playlist is by using the Previous button and Next button and listening to the song that plays. The shuffle mode makes a virture out of this limitation by offering to mix up the songs for you.
The iPod shuffle is great for exercise or extreme activities that would threaten a larger iPod, especially as the controls are easy to use without looking. But it's also great if you often get new music and want to focus your listening on it without being distracted by your existing collection, or if you want to force yourself to listen to artists or albums that your normally neglect.
