The iPod touch resembles an iPhone without the phone, the camera, and the waistline. Like the iPhone, the iPod touch has a large, touch-sensitive screen that you use to control most of its functions, from playing back songs and videos to surfing the web via a wirless network and sending mail.

The iPod touch has an on/off button on the top, a volume rocker button on the side, and the Home button below the screen. The iPod shuffle has no screen and two play modes, either playing back an existing playlist in order or "shuffling" the songs into a random order--hence its name. To change from playlist mode to shuffle mode, you move the switch at the top of the third-generation iPod shuffle or one of the two switches on the bottom of the second-generation iPod shuffle.

The iPod Nano and What It Does

The iPod nano is the smallest iPod that has a screen. The iPod nano comes in 8GB and 16GB models and in various colors.

The iPod nano has a similar layout to the iPod classic, with a screen at the top of the front, the main control buttons built into the Click wheel, and a Dock Connector port on the bottom of the iPod nano. The only major difference is in layout is that the headphone socket is on the bottom of the iPod nano rather than on the top.

The iPod classic and What It Does
