What are iPods and iphones?
iPods are the best portable music player available. Small enough to fit easily into a hand or a pocket, an iPod classic can hold the contents or your entire CD collection in compressed audio files, your entire photo collection, and enough hours of video to keep you entertained for a week or more. An ipod nano holds much less but is correspondingly smaller and cuter. And an iPod shuffle, the tiniest of the lot, not only holds enough music to keep you listening all day but also has enough battery life to play it all.
The iPhone is the mobile for anyone who enjoys music and video on the move. And the iPod touch--like an iPhone without the phone bits--is a terrific mobile entertainment device, Internet tablet notepad, and even game platform.
Whichever model of iPod or iPhone you choose, you can download a dozen CDs worth of music from your computer to it in less than a minute, and you can recharge the iPod or iPhone quickly either from your computer or from any handy power outlet. And whether you use windows or Mac OSx, you can enjoy music on your computer with iTunes, the best jukebox and music-management application available.
But you can also do more--much more. Choose the iPod or iPhone that's best for you.
The iPhone is a cell phone that includes all the features of an iPod. Apart from playing music and video, the iPhone capabilities include:
- Making phone calls, including conference calls
- Checking your voicemail messages either in the order received or out of order
- Connecting to the Internet either via the cell network or via a wirless network connection

iPhone & iPod Touch!
h2>Getting to Know Your iPhone 3G/iPod touch
You hold in your hands one of the hottest pieces of technology this side of NASA: the iPhone 3G, iPhone 3GS, or an iPod touch. Holding it in your hand is not good enough, though; you need to know how to use this little wonder. Your iPhone 3G(S) or iPod touch is able to do so much more than you may realize, including making phone calls (iPhone only), sending and receiving e-mail, playing games, and managing your life.
In the article we will cover some of the basics of operating your Apple handheld device, including learning how to turn your device on and off, familiarizing yourself with the touchscreen and its interface, and discovering what those neat little icons are on the touch screen. For the sake of simplicity, we will refer to both the iPone 3G and iPhone #GS as "iPhone 3G".
Learn Your Device's Hardware & Features
Before you fire up that iPhone 3G or iPod touch, you may want to get the lay of the hardware land. One of the key features of both devices is the dearth of buttons. The iPhone 3G has only four buttons (actually there are three buttons and a switch), and the iPod touch sports just three. This lack of buttons is the most glaring physical difference from other competitive devices on the market.
The iPhone 3G has three buttons and one swith which allow you to perform multiple functions when used individually or in conjuction with other buttons.
As mentioned, the iPod touch has one fewer button than the iPhone 3G, but most of your interaction with the device will take place on the touchscreen and utiizing the Home button.
Use the Sleep/Wake Button
The Sleep/Wake button on the top of your device is used to turn it on or off, as well as lock the device when not in use. You can also assign a passcode to your device, which protects it from prying eyes (and fingers). Also, when the device is locked, nothing will happen if you touch the touchscreen, which is especiall helpful if you keep your device in a pocket or purse, for example.
NOTE
Turning off your iPhone will cause incoming call to go directly to your voice mail. Even when they are locked, the iPhone is always listing for new calls and text messages, and both the iPhone and iPod touch are on the constant lookout for new e-mails
To turn on your device, simply hold down the Sleep/Wake button for a few seconds until you see the Apple logo. Once the device powers all the way up, you will see the Home screen.
You seldom need to turn off your device; you typically will just lock it and let it sleep when not in use. Here's how to turn off your device when you need to:
Lock and Unlock Your Device
When your iPhone 3G or iPod touch is locked, it prevents tasks from being initiated by erroneously touching the touchscreen. To lock the device, press the Sleep/Wake> button and quickly release it. The touchscreen will immediately go blank, but don't worry--the device is just in a sleep mode and isn't powered off.
To unlock the device
Protect Your Device With a Passcode
If you ise an iPhone or iPod touch, it's a foregone conclusionthat you use a personal computer, whether it's a Mac or a Windowers-base PC. Since you are familiar with a computer, you most likely understand the need for security in some settings. Your iPhone 3G/iPod touch is basically a miniaturized computer, and since you will be storing personal information on it, you will most likely want to secure it from those who may accidentally, or even purposefully, wreak havoc with said information. Apple allows you to assign a passcode to your device, which is essentially a password for accessing the device once it's been locked.
CAUTION
Do not lose your passcode! If you forget your passcode and have enabled the Erase Data option, you can lose all the data on your device after 10 failed attempts at entering the passcode. You can recover your device by syncing it with iTunes if you have created a backup
